Karratha Home

One of Australia's most interesting and visually arresting regions is undoubtedly the Pilbara in north-western WA, of which Karratha is the biggest town. In a state of isolated places, Karratha is certainly a long way away - some 1535 kilometres north of Perth . Even so, people are drawn to the place that thrives on the iron and gas industries which produce 26 per cent of the gross national product.

While the town is heavily mining focused, many tend to also enjoy life off the coast, exploring the islands of the Dampier Archipelago or inland, adventuring the amazing gorges of Karijini and the Hamersley Ranges. In particular, the winter months are especially popular to the abundance of tourists who make the journey up each year to enjoy the beautiful weather and laid back lifestyle.

As a rapidly growing community which is highly transient in nature, Karratha will benefit greatly from the Mentally Healthy WA project, with its focus on building community cohesion and lifting community spirit. The project for Karratha will hopefully mean a reduction in mental health related work incidents and an improvement in the issues surrounding the generally higher disposable incomes of many living in the region.

The Mentally Healthy WA campaign aims to improve mental health in six demonstration sites in regional Western Australia. This will be achieved by increasing individual resilience and community cohesion. The campaign is the result of a consortium of Healthway, WA Country Health Services, Lotterywest and the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer Control, Curtin University. We also thank our Sponsors and Partners, in particular Pilbara Iron. Entire Contents ©Copyright 2006 Mentally Healthy WA.
