Capoeira CDO Perth

We are Capoeira Group Cordão de Ouro Perth. Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that incorporates elements of martial arts, sport, dance, music and culture. Capoeira as a sport and martial art allows practitioners to actively participate and learn to coordinate their bodies into rhythmic and flowing movements that are beautiful and mesmerizing to watch. It also greatly incorporates other forms of artistic expression through percussive instrumentation, and traditional and contemporary singing. As a form of physical fitness, it is a way in which a person can improve all aspects of physical well being, whether it is strength, flexibility or endurance. Cordão de Ouro Capoeira also incorporates a number of traditional and unique features of the Brazilian culture such as Samba de Roda, Maculelê, and Puxada de Rede.

Capoeira CDO Perth was established in May 2011. My name is Lee Coumbe. I am also referred to as Ouriço. I was inspired to teach Capoeira in my home of Perth by my teacher C.M. Kuata and found that through his guidance I could help show the amazing world of Cordão de Ouro to the western side of the great southern land. We pride ourselves in actively condoning total social inclusion. The most rewarding teaching aspect to Capoeira is that it does not prejudice with regards to race, gender, religious belief, age, cultural background and physical and mental ability. It simply condones well being and a journey to find respect towards your body, your mind, others and the world around us.

So if you want to have fun, get fit, and discover a new culture, head to our website www.capoeiracdoperth.com.au

Joondalup Mens Shed

The Joondalup Mens Shed is one of around 400 Mens Sheds across Australia, in total there are 30 000 members. Currently, the Joondalup shed has over 80 members and is growing quickly.

At Joondalups Mens Shed participants can pass time and share skills with one another working together on useful projects either for their own personal gain of for the benefit of their communities. There are many activities within the shed including woodwork, metal work, restoration of old cars, bicycles, lawnmowers etc., computer skills, cooking classes and crafts. However, often some members may just sit and chat over a coffee. One useful aspect of the Joondalup Mens Shed is that it can be used as an area for participants to mentor young people.

Studies have shown that maintaining good social contacts and feeling useful are important determinants for good health and well-being. The primary focus of the Joondalup Mens Shed is to address isolation, loneliness and various causes of low self esteem to increase the health outcomes of its participants.

The Joondalup Mens Shed attempts to meet these needs by providing a place where men of all ages can find friendship, support and projects to help themselves and their communities.

Blooming Minds

One in five Australian adults experience a mental disorder every year yet there is still a lot of misunderstanding about mental health problems. This adds to stigmatising attitudes about mental illness and prevents people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents people providing appropriate support to colleagues and family members experiencing mental illness, simply because they do not know how.

Mental Health First Aid is a two day course that teaches how to help a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid training is being used by organisations and government departments to equip staff with the knowledge and skills to respond to issues in their clients, in themselves and their colleagues. By empowering staff with the skills to appropriately respond to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis, they are able to improve the likelihood of the person getting much needed support and intervention. Mental Health First Aid covers the topics of Anxiety; Depression; Psychosis and Substance Use Disorder. Using case studies, activities and a multi-media presentation, participants learn the symptoms; functional impact; treatment options and community resources for each of these disorders.

To discuss how this course can be customised for your group please contact: Tasha Broomhall Blooming Minds 0447 619 506 info@bloomingminds.com.au www.bloomingminds.com.au

North Fremantle Community Arts Development Inc

North Fremantle Community Arts Development (NoFCAD) Inc runs a variety of music and arts education programs in the Perth metropolitan area. We believe that the arts are an important element in community and individual identity, and that arts opportunities should be available and accessible to anyone regardless of financial circumstances, opportunity or level of experience. NoFCAD supports and promotes local endeavour in the arts in two main ways:
1) By providing child and adult beginners with high quality arts education opportunities at the lowest possible cost, and
2) By providing arts practitioners with opportunities to work or volunteer in their professional field in a way that is of benefit to the community.
NoFCAD offers adults who have previously learned an instrument and wish to return to music, or adults who have taken up an instrument in later life, a chance to enjoy making music in a group by joining The Dorkestra chamber ensemble. Adults without any musical experience can participate in group lessons on the violin or cello, or attend our regular music appreciation seminars. All adults’ programs aim to be socially and musically enriching.
Please contact NoFCAD executive officer Claire Coleman on 0488 952 370 or nofcad@northfreo.asn.au for further information about any of the above programs.

Perth Pirates Dragon Boating Club

Ahoy matey! Welcome to the Perth Pirates!
We’re a fun and hearty bunch — and always happy to have new members join, regardless of their level of fitness or experience. Our club members are mostly in the 20’s to 60’s age range — and with one of our beloved Pirates being 82 years old (and still paddling in regattas!), it is clear that dragon boating is truly a sport that most anyone can do! Although the Pirates are renowned for having a good time (and perhaps for occasionally hiding the mascot from other dragon boat clubs), we are also keenly competitive and have won many trophies at regattas. The Perth Pirates paddle out of the Maylands Sport and Recreation Center, training several times a week, all year long. There are normally four regattas each summer — competing against other dragon boat teams in 200 m, 500 m and 2,000 m races. A State Championship is held at the end of the summer season, and normally a State team (as well as club teams) from WA attend the National Championships. Www.perthpiratesdragonboatclub.com

Inclusion WA

Inclusion WA has been working for over 20 years to connect individuals living with a disability, disadvantage or are disconnected, to sport, recreation and arts activities in mainstream settings. We achieve this by offering personalised service to people with disabilities, their families (and support networks) and by encouraging social inclusion through disability services organisations.

We offer various programs, training and consultancy to sport and recreation organisations to facilitate inclusion.

Operating across the majority of the metropolitan area, the Recreation Access Program focuses on working one-to-one; identifying an individual’s interests and passions and exploring local participation options. The program relies on a 50/50 partnership and, as such, progress can be dependent on choices and commitment of the individual to participate in recreational activities.

Inclusion WA offers personalised, one-to-one support in the community for people who have received Disability Service Commission Alternative to Employment (A.T.E) funding or for people who have private funding who wish to become involved with community based activities.

Our training programs provide staff with the skills and knowledge required to explore social inclusion opportunities for the people they assist. The training is practical for new staff, as well as being an important refresher for long term staff, who will benefit from current techniques and sharing of success stories.

Inclusion WA is committed to ensuring people with disabilities can access opportunities to participate in sport and recreation activities within mainstream settings

The University of Western Australia, Singing: A Healthy Way to Live Project Choirs

The UWA Singing: A Healthy Way to Live project was established in 2008 to investigate the benefits of group singing for health. Their research has demonstrated both physiological and psychological improvements as a result of singing group participation, confirming the value of music and community.

The project has formed several singing groups in the Perth region, particularly for seniors, as well as for persons living with dementia and their caregivers. Each of the groups promotes healthy living and offers fun and friendship through song. A range of popular favourites, showtunes, and other types of music are included in the repertoire, and no prior musical training is necessary for participation.

There are several performances scattered throughout the year, including the annual Sing It! concert, which brings together a number of local choirs and even gives the audience an opportunity to join in and sing along.

For more information on how you can get involved in a choir for seniors or a singing group for persons living with dementia, or for details on the next annual Sing It! concert, phone 08 6488 8163.
